Introduction:

In 1932, wife and mother, Suzanne Corbett Steele went to Paris with her three children to study Molière and his play, School for Wives. She was accorded a presentation under the sponsorship of the Comédie-Française in Paris – and the French loved her. “To appreciate her audacious endeavor (please understand that) she played alone all the roles of School for Wives before a Parisian audience.” – Robert Lorette, Paris-Soir, Paris, France, Aug. 8, 1932.

Chapter 1: A Passion for Drama (Excerpt)
She called herself a “monologist.” She had a great passion for the arts, especially the theater. She combined that love with persistence, hard work and an amazing talent.

Chapter 2: Applauded in Paris (Excerpt)
Mme Beatrix Dussane, Sociétaire de la Comédie-Française was enchanted by Suzanne’s interpretation of her beloved Moliere and accepted her for study at the home of the great playwright.

Chapter 3: Broadway! (Excerpt)
Suzanne was a member of a group of artists who presented a series of performances entitled “Literature Across the Footlights” at the Little Theater (now the Helen Hayes Theater) in New York City. She also had many subsequent performances in the City.

Chapter 4: The Production (Excerpt)
There was no English translation available at the time Suzanne became interested in School for Wives, so she undertook the task herself. L’Intransigeant said, “Even in English, text keeps a classic savor, truly French.” She toured the US over a seven-year period. A copy of her translation is on the CD that accompanies this book. (It is also available in book format. See School for Wives by Moliere: The First English Translation (link to that book page) by Susan Hussey Bush.)

Chapter 5: Wife and Mother (Excerpt)
In addition to her accomplishments as an actress, Suzanne carried on the duties of wife and mother. Amusing stories relate that this was not without difficulty! Many photographs illustrate her family life.

Chapter 6: Clippings and Letters (Excerpt)
Fortunately, her extensive scrapbook was saved and many entries have been scanned, including interesting notations from newspapers of the day.
